Logistical issues

The event includes a few activities. During the covid-19 pandemic in Hong Kong, some epidemic prevention policies affected the logistic arrangements.

Since most schools resumed face-to-face classes just before the registration deadline for the event, schools or groups that did not intend to participate in the project hurried to register before the registration deadline. At the same time, the income from the competition will be used for charity and rope skipping promotion in other event, therefore no participate quota is set for the competition. The number of participants in the competition is close to 1,100, and the number of participating schools or groups exceed 130. It made the competition become the highest number of athletes in a single day rope skipping competition in Hong Kong. About 70 Catholic schools with an audience of more than 70,000 schoolchildren participated in the rope skipping experience class.

Main reason for Logistical issues

  1. Competition locations - The competition spread in Hong Kong and Macao.
  2. Covid-19 pandemic - Most of the events hosted in schools campus, and it is one of the specified premises of Vaccine Pass of Hong Kong.
  3. Lack of sufficient competition and preparation time - Lots of schools and groups register near the deadline, hard to prepare in advance.

Competition locations  - Venue logistics

The Lion Cup 2022 rope skipping competition invited athletes from Hong Kong and Macao. However due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the main competition area was set up in Hong Kong, and a small competition area was also set up in Macau, so that Macau athletes can participate in the competition together even if they cannot go to Hong Kong in person. The award ceremony of the competition was held simultaneously in Hong Kong and Macau by means of live webcast, solve logistics issues through technology.

Athletes and guests - Athlete’s and Fans & spectators logistics

One of the advantages of rope skipping competitions is that the equipment is simple and lightweight, athletes and their teams can prepare the equipment they need easily . However, Hong Kong is a city with huge population on very scarce land, and sports venues are in short supply. The competition organizer rented Yau Ma Tei Catholic Primary School (Hoi Wang Road) for competition purposes. The school has limited space and parking area. Some athletes came from remote areas and needed the assistance of the organizer to arrange the transportation of coaches. In addition, a large number of co-organizers, resulting in a large number of guests attended the event. The event also needs to arrange guest parking spaces and attendance arrangements.

Athletes' appearance order - Athletes’ logistics

A large number of people attended the competition. The total number of individual and team competitions are as high as 2,300. The school can only provide 9:00-14:00 for the competition. The competition needed to reserve about an hour for the award ceremony, only 4 hours were given to complete the entire game. The competition used all classrooms in the school as rest areas for athletes, and the school hall, rainy playground and multi-purpose activity room as competition venues for different types of events. In addition, in order to reduce the risk of transmission caused by the public gathering, the competition divided some schools and organizations into groups. Each group would not appear at the same competition venue at the same time. Furthermore, rope skipping involves individual and team competitions, the same athlete can represent different schools or groups at the same time and participate in the same competition item in different groups. All of the above factors contribute to the complexity of arranging the order of players.

Competition materials and arrangements - Venue logistics

Since the school venue is used for this competition, the school conducts full-day face-to-face classes as usual. Therefore, the venue layout and logistics needed to be completed several days after school hours, which would not affect the school's normal classes. Hence, most of the layout work had to be done on the day before the competition. Also, all the setup of the school must be restored once the competition was finished. Moreover, during the day before the competition, the only lift of the school was malfunctioned for three hours, leading the arrangement became more difficult.

Covid-19 prevention - Athlete’s and Fans & spectators logistics

The Hong Kong government announced that starting from 24 February 2022, all persons aged 12 or above entering or staying at the following specified premises, including schools and sports premises, need to scan the QR code of the "LeaveHomeSafe" app and present a vaccine pass. In addition, the competition also refers to the Hong Kong Education Bureau's guidelines, requiring all attendees to present a soft copy photo of the negative result proof of rapid test on that day before entering the venue.

Rope Skipping promotion manpower and material arrangements - Venue logistics

About 70 Catholic schools have applied for more than 200 school rope skipping experience classes, including rope skipping performances by athletes and rope skipping tutorials. While the time, location and number of people arranged by each school may be conflicted, not only the schedule of athletes and coaches should be properly arranged, but materials for promotion should also be prepared. For example, the arrangement  of equipment transportation from the warehouse to the school, arrange disinfection after use, then send it to the next school, and finally send it back to the warehouse.

The Joint-school Rope Skipping Charity Rally - Athletes’ logistics

The Rope Skipping Charity Rally includes synchronous performances of rope skipping by 99 Catholic schools students, including kindergartens, primary schools and middle schools. Even though not all schools have rope skipping classes, demonstrations and simple tutorial videos need to be completed so PE teachers who may not know rope skipping could train and select representatives to participate in the performance.
